Every day 0n the way home from school, we get stuck at a particular traffic light. There is another way home, but the route is quite a bit longer. To prevent road rage and the odd muttered profanity, we sometimes play games. One of the games we play is the word game where you have to make up a word with the last letter of the previous word (yes, that one and I use it to teach her new words) and this day we weren’t allowing short words (5 letters or more):

Me:        “lipstick.”

Missy:   “kangaroo.”

Me:        (wait for it) “onomatopoeia.”

Missy:   (without skipping a beat) “antelope.

Me:        “endo…. Hang on… do you know what onomatopoeia means?”

Missy:   “Yes.”

Me:        “You do?”

Missy:   (now laughing) “Of course I do.”

Me:        “So what does it mean?”

Missy:   (Delighted) “You know….when you need to go to the toilet in a hurry.”

Me:        “Huh?”

Missy:   (Shaking her head at my stupidity) “Automatic peeing!”

Needless to say we had a little lesson in words that imitate the natural sounds of things, but from now on they will be referred to as automaticpee-ers.

Stay tuned for the next episode…
